Empowering Safer Workplaces through Knowledge and Innovation
This past month, Ghana made a powerful statement in support of workplace safety by commemorating the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, held from 28–29 April 2025, under the theme:
“Emerging Technologies and their Impact on Workers’ Health and Safety.”
Supported by the ILO’s ACCEL Africa Project, the national celebration was spearheaded by the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, reaffirming the country's dedication to making Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) a fundamental right for all workers.
At the Accra International Conference Centre, key stakeholders gathered to explore how digitalization and artificial intelligence are reshaping the landscape of OSH.
Key takeaways included:
Hon. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Minister for Labour, emphasized the government's dedication to addressing new OSH challenges in a fast-evolving tech-driven world.
The ILO's Director-General, Gilbert F. Houngbo, called for stronger social dialogue between governments, employers, and workers to manage the implications of AI at work.
Experts from the Ghana Employers Association, Ghana Trades Union Congress, academia, and OSH professionals led engaging sessions on digital tools, mental health, and well-being.
The momentum extended beyond the capital with a significant district-level event in Sefwi Nkatieso, within the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality.
More than 100 community members, primarily from the cocoa farming and artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sectors, came together to address real OSH issues.
Topics covered included:
Safe handling and storage of agrochemicals
Risks of hazardous mining practices
Dangers of informal and unregulated work environments
Interactive sessions and peer-led discussions made this a hands-on learning experience tailored to the unique challenges of rural laborers.
